Chihuahua Potty Training - Easy or Hard?

Chihuahua potty training is no harder than potty training with any other breed of dog. What is important to remember about Chihuahuas over other breeds is that they do not react well to negative reinforcement or harsh discipline. If you want to be successful with Chihuahua potty training use positive reinforcement and start as soon as you get your puppy home. Here are some tips to help the process go as smoothly as possible.

• Use a Kennel or Crate – Dogs are born with the instinct to not go to the bathroom where they sleep. If you keep them in a crate or kennel while you are out or through the night they will not have accidents during these times. Remember to immediately take them outside upon your return or first thing in the morning. When they go to the bathroom give them a treat to show them this is the right way to do it.

• Keep your Timing Consistent – The best policy is to take them out first thing in the morning, after every meal, and right before bedtime. By keeping to these times you are more likely to get their bodies on a schedule and prevent accidents.

• Use Positive Reinforcement – Chihuahuas do not train well when you yell and shout at them. If you get mad or lose your temper they will not get the lesson you are trying to show them. If you used positive reinforcement, like given them a treat every time they do what you asked, they will learn much more quickly and have fewer accidents.

• Don’t Rub Their Nose in it – There are old school training techniques that say to rub your dog’s nose in it if they have an accident in the house. This is not effective with Chihuahua potty training. If an accident does happen, and they will, it is better to take them outside as soon as it happens. This will let them know that they should be doing their business outside and not on your living room floor.

• Don’t let them be sneaky – Little dogs are able to hide and go in the corner without you even realizing they are doing it. It is important to keep track of your little dog at all times until they are fully house broken. Stopping them from going to the bathroom in the house is a lot harder than never letting them do it at all.

Chihuahua potty training can be a challenge for both the pet owner and the pet, but all it takes is a little patience to get the job done. If you want a Chihuahua for a pet you have to be willing to put in the time and effort that it will take to get them properly trained. You will be happy that you did when they get older.

Chihuahua potty training – If you have been wondering how to potty train a Chihuahua, you’re in the right place. One of the most important things you should be aware of is the fact that Chihuahua’s are very intelligent and very stubborn at the same time. So getting the upper hand on your pet will be one of the biggest important steps. Chihuahua’s are lovely animals because of their size and how adorable they are. However, training these little adorable creatures can be a challenge for anyone that owns one as a pet.

You are probably already aware that they definitely try to get their own way, and without direction you may end up cleaning up after them for years to come. So training your pet early will be the main focus of this article. Below you will find some very important steps that will guide you through your discovery of how to potty train a Chihuahua. Each step below has been carefully laid out in a way that you can itemize what you need to do and make all the preparations that need to be made.

Step 1: Although Chihuahua’s may seem stubborn they are in fact one of the most intelligent dog breeds on the planet. Because of their intelligence, if they are not trained properly from the get-go you will find that their stubbornness will kick in and they will almost be impossible to train. If your Chihuahua is a puppy you can begin training with them immediately by showing them where their spot is for doing their business. The important thing you need to remember is the exact times of day when your puppy needs to go potty. These times are typically after they wake up, and right after they eat. You want to make a note of this by following them right after these particular occasions. You will need to use commands such as “go potty” when taking your dog to their special spot.

Step 2: Chihuahua potty training is something that goes on all day long, until you feel comfortable that they are making the journey to their special spot of their own. This is very important because many people will start the potty training process and then give up halfway through. This simply cannot happen when potty training a Chihuahua. Instead you must be determined and committed to making sure they are going to their spot during the times when they need to take care of their business. Each time they go you need to use the commands such as “go potty” so they can associate this command with doing their business.

Step 3: Each time your pet does its business the way it’s supposed to, you will need to commend them with positive reinforcement allowing them to feel extremely comfortable and happy they did something to please you. No animal will ever do what you tell them to do if you force them to do it. It may work once or twice, but your animal will end up not doing anything.

Positive reinforcement needs to be used each and every time your pet acknowledges and reacts to your command in a positive manner. Once this is proven several times you will find that learning how to potty train your Chihuahua wasn’t as difficult as you thought.

Robot 1 Hello there (wave)
Robot 2: Why are you looking so happy?
Robot 1: I am just excited because I am picking up my Chihuahua puppy tomorrow.
Robot 2: That is indeed exciting news. Chihuahuas are very cute and loving dogs.
Robot 1: My Chihuahua will be the perfect puppy. He will follow me everywhere and lavish me with affection.
Robot 2: Are you ready for potty training your puppy.
Robot 1: Potty training? I am not familiar with this concept.
Robot 2: Potty training involves teaching your dog the correct place to relieve himself.
Robot 1: Relieve himself? Robot 2: That means peeing and pooping. Your Chihuahua is a carbon based life form. These are things that all carbon based life forms do. Robot 1: How often will the puppy relieve himself? Robot 2: He will need to go potty several times a day.
Robot 1: Goodness gracious. When will he outgrow this unfortunate behavior?
Robot 2: Oh no, this is not something your Chihuahua will outgrow. He will do it every day for his entire life. Robot 1: This is quite disturbing. My circuitry could be damaged by exposure to this… material if my Chihuahua goes potty in the house.
Robot 2: That is why it is so important to train the puppy to go potty outside the house instead.
Robot 1: But I do not know how to do that. Do you think the puppy will potty train himself?
Robot 2: No it doesn’t work that way. You must start potty training your Chihuahua as soon as you bring him home otherwise you will always have problems with the dog peeing and pooping in the house.
Robot 1: That would be very unpleasant.
Robot 2: Training is not as hard as you might think. You just need a guide that explains all of the steps in potty training your Chihuahua.
Robot 1: Does such a thing exist?
Robot 2: Yes, you can find it at www.pottytrainingachihuahuapuppy.com
Robot 1: I will get this essential potty training guide immediately.
Robot 2: That is a logical decision.
Robot 1: Peeing and pooping… it seems to me that carbon based life forms have many design flaws. It makes me wonder how they have managed to survive.
Robot 2: I cannot argue this point. However, Chihuahuas are so cute that we robots can overlook these flaws.
Robot 1: Perhaps they will find a cure for peeing and pooping some day.
Robot 2: We can always hope.
Robot 1: Thank you for this enlightening conversation. I will bring my puppy to see you soon.
Robot 2: I will look forward to meeting your Chihuahua puppy.

Question by nina: What is the very best approach to use when potty training a chihuahua?
I can’t appear to potty train my three month old chihuahua. I have tried spanking, scolding, putting him outside, but he doesn’t appear to get it. Does anyone have the answer?

Greatest answer:

Answer by sinfully sweet
my friend had a chihuahua and trained it to go in a litter box ! he said he employed some scent you can get from the pet store to make them want to go, but also after the dog eats put it outside or in the box until it goes, praise it, etc. also he said you could use some of those wee-wee pads then gradually move them outside or in near then in the box then remove them and the dog will go then. great luck, chi’s are excellent little dogs, if i didn’t have to travel so a lot i would get 1.

Admin added this comment: Please, whatever you do, DO NOT EVER spank your Chihuahua when training (or any time for that matter). You must remain calm, the more stressed you get, the more stressed your puppy will get and the further away from the desired behavior you will get.

You must choose one training technique, whether it be crate training, paper training etc. and stick with it. Consistency and patience are the keys to successful potty training, otherwise you will just confuse the poor little fellow and he won’t know what the hell you want him to do.

A three month old is very young and I think that the author of this question is expecting far too much from their puppy. Successful potty training doesn’t happen overnight. There are no magic spells to make it happen quickly. Only time, along with patience and consistency will bring the reward of a properly house trained puppy. I cover all of this in depth in my book Potty Training A Chihuahua Puppy. If you are struggling with this please do yourself a favor and spend the 10 bucks for your peace of mind.

A new puppy is a joyous addition to any home. Who can resist that cute little bundle of lovable furry fun? It would be great if puppies were potty trained and came into our homes without any mess or bother? OK, reality check here.

Just ask any dog owner what the hardest task at hand is, and most will agree, that potty training is high on the list of unpleasant tasks. Actually, potty training is a simple task, requiring merely a little patience and diligence.

First, be mindful of puppies as infant dogs, not children. Dogs are creatures of Habitual Re-enforcement. Start early with the basics, and you will have a well trained and obedient friend for many years.

A sure fire method of potty training, at least in the opinion of a close friend kennel and breeder friend of mine, is to simply catch the puppy in the act of relieving itself. Immediately approach the little guy, pick him up gently but firmly, and tell him “No No” with a firm clear voice. Carry your puppy immediately outside, preferably to a pre designated area, and set him down on his haunches, holding him firmly for a few moments. If he still needs to relieve himself, keep him in that spot and pat and praise him when he’s finished. OK! Not so hard, eh?

Guess what, he will do it again. So, make a game out of it, get the kids involved and when he starts to go, repeat the routine, acting immediately and firmly.

Puppies tend to be the center of attention at first, especially with kids, so there is usually someone at hand to scold the puppy in a gentle manner and immediately remove him to the designated site.

This method is a quick and effective method in toilet training any puppy, who, with the right amount of attention and praise, will be toilet trained in no time at all.

It’s important to catch the puppy in the act. Coming home and finding the mess a couple of hours later and then getting upset and scolding the puppy will only make your job harder and confuse the puppy. What then, you may wonder? Well, a method that has worked for me is to carry the puppy to the offending deposit, gently but firmly placing his nose into the substance and saying firmly “No No or Bad Bad”, you get the drift, and immediately carrying puppy out to the site. This method is not the favored method, but it is effective if done properly.

Chihuahua Potty Training

This article will hopefully give you some tips on Chihuahua potty training. A Chihuahua is not that difficult to potty train. Some people believe that a Chihuahua is actually easier to train the most other breeds. These little guys are very intelligent regardless of their small size. They are eager to please their owner and will learn commands quickly. The key to successful Chihuahua potty training is to be consistent. Once you choose your method for potty training stick with this method so you don’t confuse your dog.

The first decision you must make is where you want your Chihuahua to relieve himself. Some people prefer to train their Chihuahua to go in a litter box. This is very convenient and makes for easy clean up. If you have your own yard it may be better to train your dog to go outside. Once you have decided where you want him to go, keep the following in mind while training.

You can begin Chihuahua potty training at about eight to twelve weeks old. Remember that a puppy has a small bladder and therefore, cannot hold it’s urine for very long. A good rule of thumb to remember is that a Chihuahua can hold it’s urine for one hour per month of age. For example, a three month old Chihuahua should be able to hold it for three hours. The maximum time a full grown Chihuahua can go without eliminating is six to eight hours.

There are three critical times in which you should take your puppy to the intended elimination spot. You should take him outside or to the litter pan ten to fifteen minutes after eating. You should take him to the elimination spot immediately after he wakes up from a nap or immediately after being released from his crate. Be sure to praise him when he goes where he is supposed to.

Most people will use crate training. This is a simple method of Chihuahua house training. Just keep in mind that your dog will have accidents in his crate at first. It is important that you clean the crate thoroughly after each accident. Always take your Chihuahua to the spot where you want him to go immediately after letting him out of the crate.

One method of house breaking that some people prefer is called the umbilical method. This involves getting a leash and attaching one end to your belt loop and the other to your puppy. You can move about the house and always be able to keep an eye on your little one. Just be careful not to move too fast! You can take him to the intended elimination spot every hour or so. He will soon learn where he is expected to go.

Chihuahua potty training is not difficult. You must remember to be consistent and above all be patient. Some Chihuahuas can be potty trained right away while it may take a few months for others.
